Read the contract size row for the instrument in question before deciding whether somebody else’s figure was talking about the same thing at all. Account stop-out levels (measured): margin call at 60%, stop-out at 0% — confirm the live values in your terminal.
The three parameters a quoted figure depends on
- The instrument comes first: one lot stands for a different quantity on a currency pair, on metals and on an index, so a figure quoted without the instrument cannot be transferred at all.
- The volume comes second: the requirement scales with it directly, and a number quoted for one size says nothing about another until it has been rescaled.
- The leverage in force on the account where the number was produced comes third, and it is the parameter most often left out of the telling.
- Miss any one of the three and the figure is not wrong, it is unattached: it describes a case that cannot be identified.
- The price is a fourth input that nobody has to be told, because the form reads it at the moment of the calculation. That is why a quoted figure ages and a recalculated one does not.

Why a figure travels badly
Numbers spread faster than the conditions that produced them. A margin amount mentioned in a group chat arrives with none of its inputs attached, and the person repeating it is usually not the person who produced it. By the third retelling the instrument has shifted, the size has been rounded off and the leverage has been dropped entirely.
That is not dishonesty, it is what happens to a result once it is separated from its inputs. A result is a compressed statement about one specific case, and compression throws away exactly the parts that made it specific.
The repair is not suspicion about the number. It is reconstruction: name the three inputs, put them into the form as they stand for you, and compare. If the two figures agree, the cases really were alike. If they disagree, the difference is informative rather than alarming.
Which of the three is usually the one that differs
The instrument is the least likely to be lost, because it is normally part of the story being told. The volume gets adjusted silently, because whoever is listening pictures their own size while hearing somebody else's number.
Leverage is the parameter that goes missing most reliably of the three. It is a setting rather than a choice made per trade, it rarely comes up in conversation, and it changes the answer by a factor rather than by a fraction. Two accounts on the same instrument at the same size can need very different amounts because of it alone.
So when a quoted figure and a calculated one disagree by a large multiple, that is the parameter to look at first, and it can be looked at without asking anybody: it is stated on the account itself.
A figure ages, including your own
The requirement is computed from the price at the moment the calculation runs, so a figure written down today has become a quoted figure by tomorrow, carrying the same missing input as anybody else's. The fact that the person who produced it was you does not change that.
This is the practical reason to recalculate rather than remember. Re-entering three inputs takes less time than working out how far a stored number has drifted, and it removes the step where an old figure gets defended because it was correct once.
Turning a second-hand figure into your own
- Write down the three inputs the figure claims to rest on: instrument, volume, leverage. Leave a blank wherever one was not stated.
- Fill the blanks from your own case rather than guessing at theirs. The point is not to reproduce their number, it is to obtain yours.

- Compare the two figures. A close match means the cases were alike; a large gap points at the leverage almost every time.
- Confirm the figure in the trading platform before the order goes in, because that is the number the account will work from.
None of this needs the original source to be reachable. A figure whose inputs cannot be reconstructed is simply set aside: it is not evidence about your case either way.
